Dear WG members,

please find below the feedback provided by NASA/GSFC for some of the
latest AIs.
For AI-20-08, deadline is tomorrow so I will still wait one day before
closing it.
AI-20-07 and -09 have a Spring 2021 deadline.

Best regards,
Massimo

Subject: GSFC's Response to C&S WG Action Items

Massimo,

Below is GSFC’s response to the action items from the last C&S remote
working group meeting:

AI-20-07 Considering extending the simulator channel model
work in order to establish procedures for the end-to-end assessment of
coding proposals
GSFC agrees

AI-20-08 Provide comment on the (ESA) proposal for a
channel model for the validation of (turbo) channel interleavers
We currently don’t have any mission that experiences the solar
scintillation phenomenon and therefore do not have any comments on the
channel model at this time.

AI-20-09 Verify the (legacy) needs of the ISS in term of
coding
ISS uses RS+CC but the CC is done on mission unique equipment at the
ground stations. We don't see a need to include the CC as a standard for
the future.

(At CCSDS ground stations, up link is not a continuous flow of data as the
down link is. At the ground station an idle is continuously transmitted
(CCSDS PLOP-2) until the station receives a command. The idle is
interrupted and the command is inserted in the up link path. ISS uses RS
and convo on up link. Since convo is not a block code or a data block
like the CLTU, the processing must be handled differently from the normal
command methods. The convolutional coding is not done on the command at
the MOC. In the ISS case we are told that the convo code is applied at
the TDRSS ground station. If CCSDS was to adopt this, it would be a new
thing for ground stations.)

Thank you,
GSFC C&S WG Members (Shannon, Wai, Victor, Wing)
