Subject: CEF eArchiving Reference Architecture - Preliminary review invitation
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to you as the chairs of the Data Archive Interoperability Working Group within MOIMS, the leading experts on Digital Preservation and editors of the OAIS, OAIS-IF, ISO16363, and PAIS. If you think that this email and its attachments are of interest to your group and can be shared amongst your members you are free to so, and if you wish I can also forward it to your mailing list.
With this email the CEF eArchiving Building Block and E-ARK consortium are inviting you to review and contribute to the work on a Reference Architecture for Digital Preservation.
You all know that long-term preservation and availability of information is always dependent on the legal, organisational, and business context of an institution, as well as the evolving needs of the users and customers. Any effective digital archive implementation requires that the technological components of archival software and hardware be well integrated with such context and needs. In other words, we believe that digital archiving can only be reasonably implemented if it acknowledges its role as a component in the bigger institutional setting.
The eArchiving Reference Architecture aims to map crucial strategy and business components of digital preservation and connect these to archival specifications and software provided by the CEF eArchiving Building Block. The Reference Architecture should therefore help implementers to decide which archival components are needed for their specific business context.
Of course, the core eArchiving team cannot represent the whole digital preservation community. What we can do, on the other hand, is to listen to your ideas and opinions in order to produce outputs that are relevant for the whole community. Our approach is to be fully transparent and share also intermediate results every now and then with a limited group of experts asking for their kind contribution in the form of any comments, ideas, suggestions, or questions.
This time we would like to share with you two documents defining and describing the elements of the motivation aspect of the eArchiving business architecture: Principles for Long-term Accessibility of Information and the Motivation Aspect documentation.
The Principles document aims to define the key implementation agnostic principles of digital archiving and is one of the most important foundations for the rest of the architecture. Please note that the first version of this document was released for limited review in early 2020, this document is the second revision of eArchiving principles.
The Motivation Aspect document aims to summarise the key business reasons and benefits for dealing with long-term preservation and accessibility for five crucial stakeholder groups. These reasons are also related to the principles mentioned above and will guide the next steps of strategy and business layer of the Reference Architecture.
Please also note that the documents are not final. They represent an intermediate stage of our work as a consistent initial set of drivers, goals, and principles. We understand we will most likely have to reformulate or restructure them but would really like to hear your opinions and ideas before doing so!
