Mike,
You can find the message that I sent to LOTAR below.
"Also… I’m just trying to learn the players in this field… what do you
know about the relationship between LOTAR and PDES? It seems to me LOTAR
is more industry focused, while PDES is agency focused. But it seems like
they are either collaborating or overlapping. "
There is a great deal of overlap and collaboration between PDES and LOTAR
membership. Both groups consist of representatives from Federal Agencies,
defense or other manufacturing industries and the software developers for
the CAD/CAM/CAE and other supporting software used by the first two
groups. Both groups are concerned with continued long term preservation and
continued usability of data. In their case long term preservation is
measured in 18 month increments (one version of the software to the next)
and usability as interoperability between different hardware/software
stacks employed along the supply chain - and over 60-100 year time frames.
These folks are very close to the coal face when it comes to long term
preservation.

Subject: Course on OAIS and Trustworthy Digital Repositories
To: LOTAR <lotar at lists.purdue.edu>
There will be a course on the management and auditing of Trustworthy
Digital Repositories held the week prior to the March 2017 LOTAR Meeting in
Gathersburg, MD. You can find the details below.
*Gaithersburg, MD USA 6-10 March 2017*
*High Level Training Course on ISO 14721, ISO 16363 and ISO 16919 for
Managers of Digital Repositories,* *by the authors of these standards**.*
The Primary Trustworthy Digital Repository Authorisation Body (ISO-PTAB)
plays a major role in training auditors and repository managers. There are
three important ISO standards:
§ ISO 14721:2012 (OAIS – a reference model for what is required for an
archive to provide long-term preservation of digital information)
§ ISO 16363:2013 (Audit and certification of trustworthy digital
repositories – sets out comprehensive metrics for what an archive must do,
based on OAIS)
§ ISO 16919:2014 (Requirements for bodies providing audit and
certification of candidate trustworthy digital repositories – specifies the
competencies and requirements on auditing bodies)
These three standards form a closely related family and an understanding of
their principles is becoming increasingly important in establishing an
internationally recognised and certified set of Trustworthy Digital
Repositories. Many national and commercial repositories are preparing for
certification and legislation is already in place in Italy requiring
repositories to be certified. It is important to ensure you have the
knowledge to ensure your data is trustworthy and accessible in the future
and a certified internationally recognised ISO certified repository will
give your organisation/clients the confidence and reassurance that their
data has been audited by an independent body to the highest standards. The
correct training in preparation for certification is essential and there is
no other organisation to equal the knowledge of PTAB in this area as the
tutors are the authors of these standards.
The 5-day training course will be held at The Hilton Washington DC
North/Gaithersburg from 6-10 March 2017. The course is divided into
modules, each of which consists of a presentation, practical exercises and
