Guys,

Thanks again for participating in today’s SCCS-ARD updates discussion. It’s really valuable to get feedback from folks who come at these materials fresh, because it’s a way to get immediate assessment of whether what we have to say, and how we say it, are useful and meaningful.

I’m attaching here the two items I said I would send (and a third):

  1. An OV-1 style diagram from the IOAG Lunar Comm Architecture, for inclusion in Sec 2
  2. The RASDS++ “what security topics associate with which viewpoints” analysis that we discussed
  3. A CCSDS Security Architecture overview (not mentioned during the meeting, but relevant)

In regards the SCCS-ARD security topic we discussed, we agreed that security would be attended to in this document, but handled “with a light hand”. Aside from pointing to the SEA Sec WG Security Architecture for Space Data Systems (SA-SDS) document that Paul is to edit,
CCSDS 351.0-M-1<https://public.ccsds.org/Pubs/351x0m1.pdf>
I take that to mean that we will be thorough in addressing security topics where they appear, but will not hammer on the topic. The SA-SDS should provide that thorough focus on Security, and it will be referenced.

The last set of slides may prove useful in the context of the SA-SDS, so I added it to the mix. It’s a product of my own fevered imagination, but it has had some outside review by CCSDS and security specialists and may be of value since it tries to incorporate some Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) elements. I leave it to you to determine if that is the case. Oh yes, and I will point out that when we get into the SSI portion of this SCCS-ARD document that security will become an even bigger concern since we will be trying to address it in a multi-mission, multi-agency, interoperability and cross support context.

The RASDS++ PPT I have attached addresses security topics in each of the eight RASDS++ viewpoints. This grew out of a review of NIST 800-160v1r1, where many of these perspectives seemed to not be addressed in any rigorous way. These specific viewpoint related security topics, or some version of them, will appear in the RASDS++ document that I am editing. I think they should be reflected in some way in this SCCS-ARD and also in the SA-SDS. We can use this opportunity to get a smooth flow across all three of these separate, but related, documents.

Just to be clear, these three document are related in the following way:

  1. RASDS++ is a “meta” architecture, it provides a specific set of viewpoints that can be used to describe specific architectures
  2. SCCS-ARD uses parts of the RASDS framework to establish and guide the structure and presentation of how to integrate and deploy a large set of CCSDS standards, using the four viewpoints that it adopts
  3. SA-SDS uses parts of the RASDS framework to establish and structure its exploration of security topics within space data systems architectures

Right?

Cheers, Peter
