CSSMWG colleagues ---
As a result of today's CSSMWG webex, I've updated the Tech Note to include a diagram of the top-level XFDU Package structure as it applies to TGFT. The updated file is at URL
http://cwe.ccsds.org/css/docs/CSS-SM/CWE%20Private/Terrestrial%20Generic%20File%20Transfer%20Book/XFDU_for_TGFT_TechNote-v0.2-170215.docx
Best regards,
John

Subject: XFDU for TGFT Tech Note (first draft) on CWE
CSSMWG colleagues ---
For the past few months I have been investigating the applicability of the various (and overwhelmingly numerous) options to enclosing Terrestrial Generic File Transfer (TGFT) payload and metadata in CCSDS XML-Formatted Data Units (XFDUs), taking into account the simplifications afforded by the TGFT use cases as compared to the long-term archiving requirements for which the XFDU had originally been designed to support.
I have captured the results of my investigation to-date in the "XFDU for TGFT" Tech Note. I have uploaded the first draft of the Tech Note to the CWE > Cross Support Services Area (CSS)<http://cwe.ccsds.org/css> > Documents<http://cwe.ccsds.org/css/docs/Forms/AllItems.aspx?View=%7B8045374D-F8E0-4356-83CA-993252A38FE8%7D> > CSS-SM<http://cwe.ccsds.org/css/docs/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2Fcss%2Fdocs%2FCSS%2DSM&View=%7B8045374D-F8E0-4356-83CA-993252A38FE8%7D> > CWE Private<http://cwe.ccsds.org/css/docs/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2Fcss%2Fdocs%2FCSS%2DSM%2FCWE%20Private&View=%7B8045374D-F8E0-4356-83CA-993252A38FE8%7D> > Terrestrial Generic File Transfer Book folder at URL:
http://cwe.ccsds.org/css/docs/CSS-SM/CWE%20Private/Terrestrial%20Generic%20File%20Transfer%20Book/XFDU_for_TGFT_TechNote-v0.1-170213.docx
This draft documents the results of my "walk" of the (quite extensive) XML schema for the CCSDS-standard XFDU, in which I attempted to determine what features are appropriate for all cases of TGFT, which ones were unnecessary for TGFT, and which ones might be deferred to the services that will use TGFT. While I feel as though I've done a pretty complete job in this respect, there are still some questions and considerations (marked by in-line "AUTHOR'S NOTEs" and mark-up comments) resulting from ambiguities in the XFDU Blue Book and the intent for TGFT.
I intend to take the results of the analysis and document a simplified set of XFDU construction rules for TGFT in section 3 of the tech note, and to add at least one example. My plan is to have the next draft of the Tech Note with these two topics addressed by the end of this month (February).
We can discuss this Tech Note if there is time in tomorrow's webex.
Best regards,
John
