[Sls-ocm] Final Communique from IOP3 (Contains Optical Comm Direction)

Dear Gian Paolo,

NASA would like to request at least a two day BOF on optical communications. We don’t believe one day will be enough. NASA plans on sending at least three people (one from NASA Goddard, one from NASA JPL, and one from MIT Lincoln Laboratory) and may bring as many as five.

Sincerely,
Bernie

Dear All,
I want to acknowlege both IOP-3 Communique and Bernie's indication for a optical BoF at Fall '13 meetings.

SLS Area will start caring about organizing it and interested agencies are welcome to express on this list their support and expected numbers of participants.

Fingers crossed!

Regards

Gian Paolo

Hello!

This is Bernie Edwards from NASA. It has come to my attention that some members of this mailing list may not have seen the Final Communiqué from the recently held Interoperability Plenary (IOP-3). I have attached it. On page 5, you will find the position of space agency senior leaders on the work of the Optical Link Study Group, which I have copied below:

The IOP-3 encourages the member agencies to prepare for optical communications as the next
evolution of space communications; therefore:
1. The IOP recognizes the good work of the OLSG and the benefits of developing
interoperability in the domain of optical communications.
2. The IOP recommends that the member agencies begin preparing for future cross support
of space-Earth and space-space optical communications by developing interoperable
standards.
3. The IOAG is requested to provide guidance to CCSDS in the development of the required
standards.
4. The IOP urges collaboration on demonstrations, and experiments that may be useful in
the standardization and the development of optical communications technology.
5. The IOP member agencies are encouraged to share with other IOAG members their
technical and operational experience.
6. The IOP recommends assessing the results of the upcoming technology demo missions to
verify the feasibility of a common wavelength for a future intersatellite link in the context
of a data relay system in order to facilitate interoperability. This would be similar to the
concept of the Space Network Interoperability Panel (SNIP) approach.
7. The IOAG is requested to report progress in the optical communications cross support
area at IOP-4.

I believe this is good news for optical communications standadrization, and the OLSG will be making final recommendations to IOAG soon. I am looking forward to the upcoming CCSDS Technical Meeting in San Antonio, Texas the last week of October. NASA will officially request to CCSDS that an Optical Communications BOF be formed soon with the intent of creating a Working Group.

Sincerely,
Bernie
