Dear SCCS-ARD sub-group.

This is just a short reminder that we will be holding the SEA-SA Webex on Monday, 3 May. The Agenda is to continue review of the updates to the doc that John has prepared. A key focus will be the emails that John, Gippo, and others have exchanged relating to how to describe the three different, but related, Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM) approaches that are now standardized. These have the property of shifting the boundaries between CCSDS identified “data link layer” and “physical layer” sub-layers, as well as adding new physical layer signaling structures.

There have been some continuing side discussions involving some of the SLS Area folk. After discussing the complexity that this adds to what would otherwise be a pretty normal set of protocols layers I still believe that we need two separate diagrams, one that shows “normal stuff” and the other that includes all of these “complexifications”. I do not want to complicate the “mainline” discussion with all of this complexity, so I would choose to sequester it in its own “high rate VCM” section that covers SCCC, DVB-S2, and VCM. I do agree that the CCSDS VCM, as written, is a sort of “overview” of all three standards.

Hope to see you all then.

Peter

PS – I will shortly resend the WebEx appointment info for these standing monthly meetings for anyone who does not have it. We do not plan to have a “Working Meeting” during the normally scheduled CCSDS working sessions, but I am trying to schedule a special coordination session with our SLS, SIS, and CSS colleagues to review the changes we are working on.
