I have attached a much simplified high-level view of SOIS, based on recent developments in the SOIS-app working group, and based on discussion in the previous SAWG teleconference. The old layered architecture diagram is present to show SOIS concepts before the recent developments.

The new layered diagram for SOIS comes from Richard Melvin as a summary of the parts of SOIS that are expected to be most valuable. I put in a slight revision of that diagram that replaces some of the special symbols with standard symbols, for use in the SAWG context. The latter diagram explicitly addresses the question of where the electronic data sheets fit in SOIS.

The previous diagrams showing interactions between SOIS services in functional categories have been removed, because they did not gather much agreement in the SOIS working group. The two layered diagrams described above represent the working group consensus. Those two diagrams also represent the categories of data that flows in interactions between services as small rectangles with suggestive labels.

Following that is a series of protocol-stack diagrams to show explicit paths of communication between software and hardware components. These diagrams represent the most recent discussions in the SOIS working group, concerning the use of a software bus in addition to a hardware bus (such as a backplane, or SpaceWire) to achieve a distributed service-oriented architecture on board a vehicle.

The plug-and-play information follows that. I copied Yonghui’s diagrams. This section presents another important view of the participation of electronic data sheets in SOIS architecture.

The diagrams show categories of data, but there could be more information about the content of the data that flows across SOIS service interfaces. I haven’t yet summarized that in a way that is consistent with the SOIS magenta books without being redundant.

Dear SAWG,

Roger just reminded me that I owe you the notes from our last telecon. They are attached here. During that meeting we reviewed the existing MOIMS & SOIS materials and identified a set of action items to bring them closer to completion and into better alignment. The details are in the attached notes.

We agreed to schedule the next telecom on 22 June @ 0700-0900 Pacific

1. Exchange via email the specific content for next meeting

2. Clarify SOIS service interfaces and message contents (MOIMS are relatively well understood)

3. Review the updates to the MOIMS materials to bring them in line and to incorporate the MOIMS DAI WG

Another request was that I provide the papers I described that might be of use as background. I have attached here the presentations and papers that I gave at SpaceOps 2016. There are two sets:

1) The paper on the modeling method that has been developed by me, Marc Sarrel and Sandy Friedenthal

2) The paper on the CCSDS “building blocks” that covers the other four areas, space link (SLS), space internetworking (SIS), cross support (CSS), and systems engineering (SEA).

I’ll send out the meeting and WebEx info separately.

Best regards, Peter

Hi Peter,

Did you produce notes from our last telecon?

I seem to remember you editing something on-line …

Cheers

Roger

Dear All,

It looks like this time works for everyone. Let’s give it a shot and see where we are.

Thanks, Peter
