Could any of you CCSDS data archiving types please spare some time to
help Dr. William Noel, who is Curator of Manuscripts at the Walters
Art Museum in Baltimore? If you have comments and suggestions, please
contact him directly.

Best regards
Adrian

>Dear Eric, Adrian, Don and Pat
>
>I write to you, either because you have been helpful with the Archimedes
>Project, or thought you might be interested in it, or both - in the hope
>that you will give us feedback at a crucial stage in the process. We put up
>our Alpha dataset in March, and did not get much of a response from people.
>The Beta is now up, and it is remarkably untested. I would be most grateful
>to you if , amongst all your other obligations and interests, you could take
>a look at it. It is at www.archimedespalimpsest.net. These are the
>questions I think I would like you to answer, but then again, you should
>feel entirely free to criticise it in ways I have not thought of.
>
>1) The README document is the entryway into the dataset. Is it clear. If
>not, why not.
>2) Do we provide adequate paths for our consumers to access the data.
>3) what do you think of our directory/folder structure
>4) are there things missing from the dataset that you think should be there,
>especially as regards preservation.
>
>If you could have a look at this and come back with responses by June 13, I
>would be most grateful. Also if you know anyone else who could and would
>help us, please let me know.
>
>
>Thank you so much

>Subject: Archimedes Palimpsest Alpha Release
>
>As members of our Archimedes Palimpsest team have discussed with you, on 31
>March we released our Alpha data set of initial digital images and
>transcriptions with metadata for your review, comment, feedback and
>questions. This is our first release of our "in-work" data product to
>potential users and service providers for review, debugging and initial
>application development. We understand there will be bugs, inconsistencies
>and errors in this data set, which is why we are doing this: To learn as we
>proceed with development of our data set.
>
>This data set is hosted on www.archimedespalimpsest.net
><<http://archimedespalimpsest.net>http://archimedespalimpsest.net>
>for access and review.
>Please send your comments and feedback to me at wnoel at thewalters.org by 15
>April, 2008.
>
>No major announcements are being or to be made about this release, as the
>data set remains preliminary, incomplete in some areas, and subject to
>update and change. We do not intend for this Alpha data to be further
>distributed, although you may share it with associates who may be able to
>offer feedback or wish to work on this with applications. The Archimedes
>Palimpsest data is being released with license for use under Creative
>Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported Access Rights. Copies of any articles
>published based on the data must be sent to William Noel, Walters Art
>Museum, Baltimore, MD. For the Alpha and Beta release, the attribution
>includes the disclaimer: "INITIAL DATA SET. For review and product
>development only, until replaced with complete data set by 29 October 2008.
>Send comments and feedback to wnoel at thewalters.org ."
>
> This data set comprises digital images and transcriptions of the
>Archimedes Palimpsest, including:
>
> 1. A large amount of the data in very large files are all the raw
> images refined into 8-bit TIFF files, processed pseudocolor
> images, in-work registered Heiberg images and in-work registered
> XRF images. All these files include embedded metadata and
> metadata files.
> 2. An in-work set of TEI standard XML tagged Unicode transcriptions
> from Archimedes' Floating Bodies, including embedded metadata and
>associated
> metadata files. Spatial tagging is not included in the Alpha
> Release.
> 3. A "Read-Me" document describing the data set and contact information.
> 4. Supporting documentation for review (and ultimately archival purposes)
>including standards used.
>
>You will note that we are simply providing the image and transcription files
>(just a smaller set of the latter in this Alpha, with more to come). These
>transcription files do not yet have the spatial tagging, which will be
>included in the Beta release. We will not be developing a GUI for viewing or
>linking these files. A number of you have expressed interest in doing so,
>and the Creative Commons license is intended to give you opportunity to do
>so.
>
>We look forward to your comments and feedback as we refine our digital
>product for our Beta release at the end of May, and our final release on 29
>October, 2008.
