I write to you, either because you have been helpful with the
Archimedes<br>
Project, or thought you might be interested in it, or both - in the

that you will give us feedback at a crucial stage in the process. We put

our Alpha dataset in March, and did not get much of a response from
people.<br>
The Beta is now up, and it is remarkably untested. I would be most
grateful<br>
to you if , amongst all your other obligations and interests, you could
take<br>
a look at it. It is at

www.archimedespalimpsest.net. </a> These are the<br>
questions I think I would like you to answer, but then again, you
should<br>
feel entirely free to criticise it in ways I have not thought
of.<br><br>
1) The README document is the entryway into the dataset. Is it
clear. If<br>
not, why not.<br>
2) Do we provide adequate paths for our consumers to access the
data.<br>
3) what do you think of our directory/folder structure<br>
4) are there things missing from the dataset that you think should be
there,<br>
especially as regards preservation.<br><br>
If you could have a look at this and come back with responses by June 13,
I<br>
would be most grateful. Also if you know anyone else who could and
would<br>
help us, please let me know.<br><br>

No major announcements are being or to be made about this release, as
the<br>
data set remains preliminary, incomplete in some areas, and subject
to<br>
update and change. We do not intend for this Alpha data to be
further<br>
distributed, although you may share it with associates who may be able
to<br>
offer feedback or wish to work on this with applications. The
Archimedes<br>
Palimpsest data is being released with license for use under
Creative<br>
Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported Access Rights. Copies of any
articles<br>
published based on the data must be sent to William Noel, Walters
Art<br>
Museum, Baltimore, MD. For the Alpha and Beta release, the
attribution<br>
includes the disclaimer: "INITIAL DATA SET. For review and
product<br>
development only, until replaced with complete data set by 29 October
2008.<br>

This data set comprises digital images and transcriptions of
the<br>
Archimedes Palimpsest, including:<br><br>
1. A large amount of the data in very large files are all the
raw<br>
images refined into 8-bit TIFF files, processed
pseudocolor<br>
images, in-work registered Heiberg images and in-work
registered<br>
XRF images. All these files include embedded
metadata and<br>
metadata files.<br>
2. An in-work set of TEI standard XML tagged Unicode
transcriptions<br>
from Archimedes' Floating Bodies, including embedded
metadata and<br>
associated<br>
metadata files. Spatial tagging is not included
in the Alpha<br>
Release.<br>
3. A "Read-Me" document describing the data set and
contact information.<br>
4. Supporting documentation for review (and ultimately
archival purposes)<br>
including standards used.<br><br>
You will note that we are simply providing the image and transcription
files<br>
(just a smaller set of the latter in this Alpha, with more to
come). These<br>
transcription files do not yet have the spatial tagging, which will
be<br>
included in the Beta release. We will not be developing a GUI for viewing
or<br>
linking these files. A number of you have expressed interest in
doing so,<br>
and the Creative Commons license is intended to give you opportunity to
do<br>
so.<br><br>
We look forward to your comments and feedback as we refine our
digital<br>
product for our Beta release at the end of May, and our final release on
29<br>
