Hi Don

I've added a link to your document to the OAIS review site
http://review.oais.info/show_bug.cgi?id=235

The purpose of the site was to allow everyone - including those not on the
MOIMS-DAI list - to see all comments.

I added a comment:

I think your concerns are included in the other suggested changes, in
particular http://review.oais.info/show_bug.cgi?id=115

For example that proposed to change the definition of "Independently
Understandable" to "Independently Understandable: A characteristic of
information that is sufficiently complete to allow it to be interpreted,
understood and used by the Designated Community, for example to achieve a
set of Preservation Objectives, without having to resort to special
resources not widely available, including named individuals."

There were some concerns about "use" but I think that the intention has been
maintained.

You talk about "experience" - isn't this the same as RENDER the digital
object and that rendering then experienced by a human.

The Preservation Objectives are there to be more explicit about what the DC
should be able to do.

In terms of Information Objects and Representation Information - I think
what perhaps needs to be explained is that to make up an Information Object
one needs the Data Object and _enough_ Representation Information. If the
Knowledge Base is enough then there is no "extra" Rep Info needed.

Therefore although you have written an interesting document I don't think we
need to delay further work on the OAIS review, and probably should have been
just a comment on http://review.oais.info/show_bug.cgi?id=115

All,

After taking a more detailed look at digital preservation concepts than I
did originally as a co-editor of the OAIS RM, I now find I missed an
important aspect of information and its presentation to human senses. There
is also an error in Representation Information modeling as it is not always
an Information Object. This paper is my attempt to pull this together into
what I hope is understandable and convincing.
