Peter,

In the CSS Area we are aware of the sentiment you report in your item 1) below. I think it would be a good item for the CESG agenda at next month’s meeting. I plan to have some bullet points for discussion based on what we are seeing in the CSS Area.

Best regards,
-Erik

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [Cesg-all] Some observations about standards, from today's SEA SAWG meeting
Importance: High

Dear CESG & WG Chairs,

We had an SEA SAWG meeting today where a couple of what I think are topics that are relevant for all of us came up. I wanted to share them with you.

  1. One of the SAWG participants, Christian Stangl of DLR, remarked that they are increasingly seeing small missions, CubeSats, show up where they are proudly stating that they are revolutionary pioneers, breaking new ground, and choosing to not use standards, or to use some other standards than CCSDS. In discussion of this we wondered if this was really healthy, or good, by any measure. Or, if they are creating or adopting new space comm standards if there was something of value there for CCSDS and our member agencies? This could just be “the Wild West” where everyone does what they want, but how do they get ground station support in these cases? Is this a source of problems or potentially a source of new ideas? Some of the recent Cloud Data Delivery discussions in CSS Area may be relevant. I’d propose this as a CESG discussion topic.
  2. Along the lines of standards, and what value they bring, but from a totally different source, is the quote I am attaching here. I have a morning habit to read a page of “The Daily Stoic”, by Ryan Holiday, along with my coffee. Today’s quote (attached below) was just too apropos.

Come to the CCSDS CESG and Working Meetings, we have the work of Philosophers to do!

Peter
