[cssm] Retirement...

Well after almost 36 years after arriving in Darmstadt in September 1986
its time to hang up my keyboard. Officially I retire at the end of July
but with leave and things my last working day will be tomorrow (22nd
June), so it was really quite nice of the Director General to arrange a
BBQ for my last working day :-) :-) :-)

Anyway I just wanted to say that I've met a lot of really good people over
the years, and most of the time its been fun, occasionally frustrating
(usually due to management) and technically interesting and challenging.
Looking back I think the most enjoyable parts were working closely with
the missions as software support/software coordinator;

Cluster 1 (it was really good to see the eventual successful launch of
Cluster 2 after the Arianne 501 fiasco)
MEX (Christmas day 2003, Software coordinator, waiting for the signal from
Beagle 2 which never came...)

CCSDS was also a really interesting part, it was good to work closely with
other agencies and see different ways of doing things.

The infrastructure software has also come a long way. When I started it
was SCOS-1, VAX/VMS and Fortran. On the H/W side we were really pushing
things, seriously bleeding edge, for about 18 months on Eureca anytime a
faster VAX was released we got the first one delivered in Europe. Its
perhaps fitting the my career at ESOC started with the dawning of the
SCOS-1 era and is drawing to a close as the sun sets on S2K (although I
think there will be a long twilight...).

Good luck with the future missions and the development of EGS-CC and the
other projects you're working on.

Finally, in the words of the dolphins from the Hitch Hikers Guide to the
Galaxy, so long and thanks for all the fish...

Cheers for now,
