Dear SLP WG,
Andrea Modenini is asking us, if we have any use cases for the Variable Length Frame (VLF) scenario in any of our agencies missions, and if so, to share them with the C&S WG.
My observation is that in the future at the Moon and eventually at Mars, the strong directionality of “uplink”, “downlink”, “forward”, “return” links will not be so strong and will give way to a kind of more homogeneous link environment. In that type of environment, I assert that link directionality is secondary at best, and therefore a more generic frame based approach, i.e., VLFs will fit better to meet the goals of these links overall. That’s my conjecture. Your opinion is welcome.

Dear C&S WG,
concerning the AI on VLFs, I received just a single input from ESA as in attachment.
It refers to Earth Observation and SCI missions using RF links only: it is shown that VLFs advantages are quite low.
Before closing the AI, given the vacation period, could you let me know by 9th September if your agency plans to submit any input for the action item in subject, and when?
As discussed during Spring 2022, it would be useful to have such inputs well before Fall meeting 2022, for finalising the concept paper.
Otherwise, in absence of use cases, I see difficult to proceed in having a project for VLFs.
@Bern, Greg: if you could pool your WGs as well.
