There is an open question concerning Section 2.4 Restrictions on Services within the USLP White Book specification.

Do these restrictions below still apply to USLP ? What is the motivation for them ? If we cannot generate valid reasons for keeping them, I recommend we remove them. Please comment.

2.2.4     Restrictions on Services
There are some restrictions on the services provided on a Physical Channel, as follows:

a)     On one Physical Channel, the Insert service shall not exist simultaneously with the Virtual Channel Frame or Master Channel Frame service.

b)    If the Master Channel Frame Service exists on a Master Channel, other services shall not exist simultaneously on that Master Channel.

c)     If the Virtual Channel Frame Service exists on a Virtual Channel, other services shall not exist simultaneously on that Virtual Channel.

d)    If the Virtual Channel Octet Stream Service exists on a Virtual Channel, other services shall not exist on that Virtual Channel.

e)     On one MAP Channel, the MAP Access Service shall not exist simultaneously with the MAP Packet Service.

Greg,
        At glance and in general it may be reasonable to avoid mixing 
services on the same channel.
This would call for applicability also to USLP unless you are sure that in 
USLP services can be mixed on a Channel without getting into troubles 
(e.g. because the type of service provided by the data unit is signalled 
within the frame).

Please find the updated clean version of the lastest USLP White book (dated April 19) on the CWE along with the updated issues list. See the names of the two files below.

There are several open issues  that I have identified in comments in this version. They are:

1. Section 2.1.1 Architecture
The use of the term transfer frame for the PDU at ISO level 2. USLP defines the PDU at ISO level 2 to be the transfer frame. This is a very important and necessary statement in this document.

2. Section 2.2.3.5 VC OCF Service

This section states: "For a given service instance, only one user, identified with the GVCID of the Virtual Channel, can use this service on a Virtual Channel.  Service data units from different users are not multiplexed together within one Virtual Channel.[K(1]

 [K(1]Last paragraph is incorrect.  It should say: For a given service instance, only one user, identified with the GMCID, can use this service on a Master Channel.  However GMCID does not yet exist in CCSDS. Need consensus from WG on how to proceed here.”

3. Section 2.2.4 Restrictions on Services

These restrictions do not appear to be valid under USLP. Clearly where USLP signals the service, coexistence of services can occur. For future discussion with the WG.

4. Section 3.6.1 Overview of VC_OCF Service

Related to #3 above. The problem is that the managed parameter for allowing a VC to contain a OCF is a VC managed parameter, but the OCF service receives and delivers all the OCF_SDUs from any VC with the MC that it receives. This problem needs resolution within the WG.

5. Section 5.3 Managed Parameters for a MC and in 5.4 for VC

VCID 63 for OID frames.  should value 63 be reserved  for all OID frames within USLP in all cases ?

6. Section 5.4 Managed Parameters for a VC

CLCW Reporting Rate - this parameter is defined in TC SDLP. Actually I think it is never mentioned elsewhere in TC SDLP. However it is important for setting the COP-1 timers. We should discuss it and see whether we want to impact also TC + COP-1.

I plan on calling an additional telecon to discuss these issues before May. I will be sending out a doodle poll today. Please respond with your availability. Thank you !

I have attached to this email as well as placed on the SLP CWE the latest clean version of the USLP White Book as well as my last redline version (showing track changes).

These files are:

The following SLP WG members held a telecon concerning the remaining open issues this morning. (There were: Victor Sank, Ed Greenberg, Greg Kazz, Gilles Moury, Tomaso deCola, Stefan Veit, Lee Pitts, Kevan Moore). We resolved the following issues:


  1.  The Transfer Frame is indeed the Protocol Data Unit (PDU) of the data link sublayer. This is stated in Section 2.1.1 Architecture.
  2.  Instead of using the VC_OCF service, we shall use the MC_OCF service. There is one MC_OCF service but all the signals come from the VCs. Any of the applicable VCs can delivery the OCF_SDU to the MC_OCF service. The applicable virtual channels are supplying their OCF_SDU to the MC_OCF service.
  3.  VCID = 63 becomes the universal OID frame for all USLP space links.
  4.  We had some discussion on CLCW Reporting Rate, which is currently defined as a VC managed parameter. Ed Greenberg suggested we remove this parameter because it is a COP-1 issue and not a USLP issue. For example, impossible to specify if one doesn’t know the uplink rate a priori . Gilles suggested to keep it there but define what kind of value it is: Is it the maxiumum number of transfer frames between 2 sequential CLCW reportings or does it represent a duration in msec ? So we have no resolution with this parameter yet.
  5.  Plan is to update the Draft USLP white book with these results and ask the WG to review this new draft USLP White book dated April 26. Provide the SLP WG with two weeks to review along with the last track change version available for comparison. Thereafter, I will poll the SLP WG by email to see if they consider this book to be in reasonable shape to ask the AD to publish it as a RED-1 version before the Rome meeting. We assume the CCSDS Secretariat will have time to turn it around and issue a RED-1 in time for a proper agency review before the Rome meeting in the middle of Oct. 2016.
