Dear SLS-SLP,

Below please consider the following Change Request to the Prox-1 Physical Layer book (as part of the 5-year review cycle) from Enrico Vassallo (RF&MOD WG Chairman) to the policy associated with the SET PL EXTENSION RF&MOD parameters.

Your comments are welcome.

Best regards,

Greg

Subject: Next CCSDS SLS-SLP Telecon on Prox-1 Data Link Layer book review - some RFM comments

Dear Greg,

I have some problems with Annex A that contains the format of the message and shows all possiblef options although not all of them are standardized.

Gian Paolo and Marjorie mentioned that a solution for the codes was agreed in the past:

>>>>>>
A.1.8.3 for example reports about two types of RS codes, but it states "Neither of these R-S Codes is specified by CCSDS in other Recommendations and therefore they are not required for cross-support" (actually this text contains some improvements).
>>>>>>

The same approach should be applied to modulations. The bit selection can be there, but it should be stated if the modulations are really part of the standard.

My specific problem is that the current Proximity-1 physical layer specifies only one data format/modulation scheme:

3.2.6.1 The PCM data shall be Bi-Phase-L encoded and modulated directly onto the carrier.
Therefore, the following statements in red should be added at the end of sections A1.8.7 and A1.8.8:

A1.8.7        Data Modulation
Bits 5-6 of the SET PL EXTENSIONS directive shall indicate the type of data modulation used:
a)        ‘00’ = NRZ;
b)        ‘01’ = Bi-Phase-Level (Manchester);
c)        ‘10’ = Reserved;
d)        ‘11’ = Reserved.

Options 00, 10, 11 are not included in the Proximity-1 Physical Layer Standard CCSDS 211.1-B-3 and therefore are not required for cross-support.

A1.8.8        Carrier Modulation
Bits 3-4 of the SET PL EXTENSIONS directive shall indicate the type of carrier modulation to be used:
a)        ‘00’ = No Modulation;
b)        ‘01’ = PSK;
c)        ‘10’ = FSK;
d)        ‘11’ = QPSK.

Options 00, 10, 11 are not included in the Proximity-1 Physical Layer Standard CCSDS 211.1-B-3 and therefore are not required for cross-support.

I hope you can agree with this change request.

Best Regards, Enrico
