Objet : [CESG] The unexpected "retirement" of the CCSDS Technical Editor

(Please forward to book captains or others in CCSDS who need to know. Many have heard already, but this message is for the record)

CCSDS,

Mr. Tom Gannett made an unexpected decision to terminate his work with the organization. He had been planning to retire for a while but delayed it to find a successor to train - - he hoped to do this himself, as opposed to an open search. Finally, agency contractual issues and upcoming renewals seemed to frustrate him.

I know this is not good news to share because we all like Tom, appreciate his work, and are used to seek his feedback and advice. His long experience in CCSDS and "corporate memory" is simply not replaceable. I personally learned a lot from him and will always credit him for keeping the interest of the organization in mind.

Tom kindly transferred numerous electronic files to us I the past few days (will soon lose his accounts by our rules). We wish him a happy retirement and the best of luck in all his pursuits. Perhaps we can still host him for a well-deserved celebration of his long service.

We are already searching for a new Technical Editor as our top priority and have already interviewed one person and are seek more referrals. We will keep you posted as this obviously impacts your work, but we ask for your patience. Please address questions related to books to your Area Directors as we try to work this together.

Thank you and see you at the Johns Hopkins University-Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) near Washington DC in June. With Tom and Peter's retirements, we will still have the Boot Camp presentation. Jim Lux kindly agreed to my request to present it. Hopefully, the new Technical Editor will be in the room at that time as well.

Sami
CCSDS Chair and General Secretary
