[SEA-exec] [EXTERNAL] [Cesg-all] Survey about current or future use of GitHub

It’s a choice. It won’t so much be a “private instance” as a CCSDS managed “public” one. I do not know if there is a reason why ESA, and other partners, would not want to use SourceForge. Can it be used for other file formats that software source files?

Peter,

Ok – I understand. I just wonder how much use a private GIT instance will get as opposed to just using SourceForge as ION uses.

Hi Howie,

Thanks for the feedback, on both topics.

  1. No, GIT does not replace Sharepoint. We will continue to use Sharepoint for all of the drafts, docs, reports, meeting minutes, etc. GIT is intended to add a Configuration Management / versioning capability for various kinds of files. The CSS SM & CSTS WGs, in particular, want it to manage their Functional Resources Model (FRM), but it could also be used to CM XML file versions and other things like that.
  2. I agree that we have to jump through hoops in order to share software, and that it is not done nearly as often as would be useful. Scott’s ION and CFDP are good examples of success. There are others. I still want to encourage this since I think it offers value to our international community.

Cheers, Peter

Peter,

I presume that Github would replace CWE/Sharepoint? While I can’t say I won’t miss Sharepoint, it does work better now than it did when it was first rolled out.

As for the use of Gitbhub to share software, that is fright with all sorts of export control sirens blaring in my head. Even if we develop prototype software, because its software, I have never had a situation where the lawyers and export control folks didn’t get into the mix. We had those problems with SCPS prototypes and I think Scott Burleigh had the problem with CFDP and DTN/ION. And I know that the Europeans, especially ESA, have the same sort of release issues that we went through in the SDLS cloud testing.

Wishing everyone a happy/pleasant/decent/sheltered Thanksgiving. :--)

Dear SEA Exec team,

Do any of your WGs have a need for something like a GITHUB CM service for files?

It occurs to me that the D-DOR Quasar catalog files could be handled in this way, as a way to provide a sort of update tracking and to make a bulk export available. Or if we have any prototype software, say from the SecWG, that we would want to offer for use by others. In the next generation of the SAWG we might want to store and make available the MagicDraw XMI models that are used for the proposed RASDS SysML annex or even the PPT files used for RASDS and SCCS-ARD/ADD documents.

Please give this some thought and register whatever uses seem appropriate.

Meanwhile, for those of you who celebrate it, have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with your families.

Best regards, Peter

Dear Area Directors and Working Group Chairs,

In order to gauge interest in a CCSDS specific GitHub or Git server (or another version-control system) I have created a short survey, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HTS6SND [urldefense.us] [urldefense.us]<https://urldefense.us/v3/__https:/urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__urldefense.us_v3_-5F-5Fhttps-3A_urldefense.proofpoint.com_v2_url-3Fu-3Dhttps-2D3A-5F-5Furldefense.us-5Fv3-5F-2D5F-2D5Fhttps-2D3A-5Fwww.surveymonkey.com-5Fr-5FHTS6SND-2D5F-2D5F-2D3B-2D21-2D21PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7-2D21dTjnnoBlqtoFyiTYWo9l7dWNay-2D2D-2D5FQ7skb8zf90-2D2D6Ghy08UjvChusjkKMw-2D2D5vy4FGiRhWAKjI-2D24-26d-3DDwMGaQ-26c-3DNwf-2Dpp4xtYRe0sCRVM8-5FLWH54joYF7EKmrYIdfxIq10-26r-3DdT3K0y3n0RD9-2D56k-2DUVMPMP98PIQRd2Kzfa-2DAwqQOww-26m-3DROHqL7NMlVRfvUb7ST3bvaN8OnIbJ4l3NcO9SHtMBfA-26s-3DEK6npVZHGieXdQVTfd2LZza-2DFTfUoQ4Swca4UjvcxlU-26e-3D-5F-5F-3B-21-21PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7-21bQ7jn30-5FWAx5jWHVgqpG67eO16awdNybAnJcukYIBOu6mIZ3BJueb8BmqMajqQi-5FpGu-5FNvl9-24&d=DwMGaQ&c=Nwf-pp4xtYRe0sCRVM8_LWH54joYF7EKmrYIdfxIq10&r=dT3K0y3n0RD9-56k-UVMPMP98PIQRd2Kzfa-AwqQOww&m=HyDykZFN8a3o_-SM-HJP88CVCxZDOF12gWQqKOY95Gw&s=rbm_skl7849P-x0t0WFbmb8-N6QS-3PnqCVKqSLyGu4&e=__;!!PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7!d6gWjyTeF6tgjn0GYV-ooR9QU1YzBtU00hMDwNtYX3vWij9j32MFh0L7XsoS7lWbmZ9-2qEu$>.
