Hi David,

It's great news to hear that the recent updates to OAIS will soon be incorporated into ISO. I recommend that you share this news with the RDA (Research Data Alliance)/WDS (World Data System) Interest Group on the certification of Digital Repositories, of which you're a member. It's important to inform the group that a new ISO update is on the way, though it's unnecessary to provide all the details of the delay. However, it would be helpful to mention that the new ISO standard is based on the 2020 version of the document.

I agree with Mark on most of his comments. It is very important to target this to the proper audiences. I see nothing regarding national standard bodies as one audience. Their understanding of ISO procedures should be above average and they can shape/smooth this transition.

You have CCSDS functioning as the editor of OAIS when its role is much larger. It also adjudicates all comments received. Tie the process to the ISO structure through SC20 TC 13 (I think)

Do you need to provide all of the ISO-CCSDS history? It may be better to just outline the  relationship and procedures going forward.

Mark is correct to link any comments to a site, formats nd procedures used in the past. This will place the changes in a familiar process.

More to say as we discuss this tomorrow.

1. Who is the target audience for this message?

2. What lists will it be sent to?

3. Do you really want people joining the DAI list just to comment on the draft? Won't this make internal DAI conversations more difficult? Wouldn't it be better to refer folks to the review.oasis.info<http://review.oasis.info/> site or set up a separate list for comments?

4. What is the significance of the new version of OAIS going through the ISO fast-track process?

5.If the primary audience for this message is folks who may want to comment on the new draft, I am not sure how helpful all of the details about CCSDS and ISO processes will be. Why not just issue a new call for comments on the latest CCSDS draft?

News on the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

This message is to provide an update on the revision of OAIS.
OAIS is edited within the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS), taking on board the widest possible range of suggested changes. What happened in the past is that once CCSDS completes its editing the document then goes through into the ISO review process immediately. Care has been taken to ensure that the CCSDS and ISO versions are identical. The ISO version in the past was simply the CCSDS version with an ISO cover sheet.
However, the new version of OAIS, which went through a long review process in CCSDS, has not yet gone into ISO. This is because the processes in ISO and between ISO and CCSDS changed. This has meant that the route to ISO has been stalled for the past year. The good news is that the issues with the CCSDS to ISO process have now been resolved.
The new CCSDS version of OAIS will go into ISO at the start of June.
The reason for this slight delay from now to June is as follows.
The ISO processes have continued and the 2012 version of OAIS (which was renewed without change in 2017) is undergoing its automatic periodic ISO review which ends in the first week of June. We must wait for that process to end before submitting the new CCSDS version through the ISO fast-track process. It would therefore make sense for people to comment on the new CCSDS version in order to avoid going through the changes resolved previously – details at http://review.oais.info<http://review.oais.info/>.
The changed ISO processes mean that there may be some typesetting changes going through the ISO system, and of course there may be some changes arising from the ISO review itself. We will ensure that the published CCSDS and ISO versions have identical content.
