That was my understanding.

Additionally, if this model is also to be technology independent, it could be an ontology, like yours or mine or something in between.

However, if you then assign a technology to this ontology (json, XML, ...) you should first create a schema from it. This schema will ensure proper instantiation and validation.

PS: Protégé can even automatically generate Java code from an ontology
