International Symposion „The critical role of university Research Data
Management infrastructure in transforming data to knowledge”
Data managers and librarians meet at the Göttingen State and University
Library of Lower Saxony to exchange experience on the development of
research data services.
In order to learn from the experience of other institutions in establishing
research data management infrastructures and to pass on its own knowledge
in this area, the eResearch Alliance, a cooperation of the GWDG and the
Göttingen State and University Library (SUB), is organising an
internationally renowned symposium on the topic of "The critical role of
university Research Data Management infrastructure in transforming data to
knowledge" from 18 to 20 March. The symposium is organised in cooperation
with the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), an
organization of the International Science Council.
Like other universities and libraries worldwide, the SUB offers researchers
a wide range of services for working with research data. Services already
cover a broad spectrum of the digital research process, from assistance in
writing applications and data management plans, the provision of
repositories for publishing and storing data to the allocation of permanent
identifiers for authors and works. All these services are operated and
developed with partner institutions in Göttingen but also regionally,
nationally and worldwide. These cooperations and the transfer of knowledge
with others are the basis for good services.
Although all universities worldwide face similar challenges in research
data management, there currently are no platforms for an organized exchange
of information on these topics. This gap will now be closed by the planned
symposium. From March 18th to 20th, experts from all parts of the world
will exchange experiences and present existing solutions in more than 50
presentations and keynote speeches. Speakers from all over Europe, but also
from well-known American universities such Stanford, MIT and Harvard will
be present to deepen their knowledge and learn from each other at the two
days of the symposium. This free event is planned as a pre-conference for
one of the most important international meetings on research data, the 11th
Research Data Alliance Plenary Meeting, which will take place in Berlin
this year.
