[CMC Alert] CCSDS Software Library

Dear CMC Members:

Attached are the following files from Leo Hartman (Canadian Space Agency) regarding the action item assigned to him concerning a CCSDS software library:

	- update to the spreadsheet identifying information that could be collected about available CCSDS implementations 

	- PDF version of the spreadsheet (in case of Excel rendering problems)

Leo believes the additional fields, properly completed, address the agency concerns noted in the "Agency responses to action items from Brazil", 2010 November 3 and in the CMC Minutes, London, 2010 November, Action Item 23. Online software library. [Excerpts below.]

The information in the table allows the originator of a CCSDS implementation to specify available license agreement options and to specify, in particular, limit their responsibility and liability for the use of their software.

Presentation of this information would also be accompanied by an explanation that the information is only provided as a convenience to users and that it does not imply any responsibility on the part of CCSDS for quality or performance of the software.

The first objective of the software library is to inform the CCSDS community in a more convenient way about the reference implementations. The issues about certification and imposing policies about quality and licensing on originators of reference implementations involve new non-trivial resource commitments that can be addressed at a later time.

CCSDS CMC Minutes
    November 1-5, 2010
    Imperial College, 53 Prince's Gate, London, UK 23. Online Software Library Update (Action Item) Leo Hartman provided information on the actions taken to date. A question was posed on whether to incorporate this online software library in the SANA registry and in the Procedures Manual. The CMC agreed that if this library is posted online, there will have to be text on the intent and caveats because CCSDS should not be responsible for maintenance and use verification of the software. The Secretary will investigate on how to support this project online. A statement of quality should come from the owner of the software. This will be discussed further at the Spring 2011 meeting.
