Dear CMC Colleagues: Attached is the letter that I sent to CalTech
concerning the obstacles that our SLS team is having with patented
technologies. I sent this in my capacity of CMC Chair, as we discussed in
email exchanges dated April 19. There was something of a delay as we
consulted with NASA Legal experts, but the letter is now in CalTech’s hands.
Before sending the letter, I called Mr. Farina but I was not able to reach
him. Hopefully this letter will get a reaction.

Dear Mr. Farina,
Attached is a letter from the CCSDS Committee to you, concerning a critical
issue that we face with our work in developing space data standards. We are
looking for assistance from CalTech in resolving a problem with a technology
for which CalTech is the patent holder, and Intellectual Ventures LLC is the
licensor. From our research, we believe that you are the most appropriate
person at CalTech for us to contact on this topic. If we are in error,
please let us know and we can reformulate our communications appropriately.
My CCSDS Secretariat staff will be sending this in hardcopy form as well. Of
course, if you want to discuss this topic on the phone, please feel free to
contact me at any time.
