Peter,
the ultimate objective is to reduce the definitions in SANA and
the intention is to "coordinate with / report to" SANA to accomplish this
goal.
It may however happen that not all books are updated at the same time as
this would require a very big effort not currently available.
We cannot therefore exclude that for a while SANA ma report the definition
from the new Magenta book together with the older definitions in (some of)
the other books.
If there is a way for marking some definitions e.g. "obsolete" this will
be used as appropriate.

I think at this stage it is important that we all in SLS are aware of the
need of coordinating with SANA and we will do that defining details at the
right point in time.

Regards

Gian Paolo

Hi Gippo,

Thanks. This addresses the second item, but it does not appear to address
the first item at all. In the worst case this effort could actually
result in adding even more distinct definitions to the SANA Glossary,
which, I hope you will agree, moves us in the wrong direction. I think
your team needs to address how you propose to handle this. Will the final
new agreed definitions all be marked as "preliminary", or will they be
marked as "official"? Or will you propose that the obsoleted definitions
be marked as "obsolete" and left until the docs that created them are
updated?

Treating old definitions as "obsolete" or "deprecated" is the moral
equivalent of how we treat Silver Books, they are not found in the main
search paths, but you can still find them. I think you need to identify
some way to handle this and review it with the SSG and the SNA.

Thanks, Peter

Dear Peter,
the proposal and the concept paper are limited to the work to be
done on that book.
However the items you mention are not neglected as already in Berlin the
SLS Area agreed to look into this issues deferring however the
implementation "as appropriate" to the point in time the other documents
can be edited.
This is not meaning that we do nothing in the meanwhile. Actually e-mail
discussion were already triggered and there was also a presentation (and
discussion) in the SLP WG about the "Glossary Issue for SLS-SLP Global
Virtual Channel Identifier (GVCID)".

Clearly during the work duplications and discrepant definitions will have
to be identified to do the work.
Once an agreement is reached for the definition to go into the new magenta
book, the CCSDS Editor will be informed to collect the changes for other
books (to be done when possible) and SANA will be informed accordingly.

I hope this clarifies your doubts and Brian can proceed with the CMC Poll.

Gippo

Hi Gippo,

From the SEA and SANA points of view I am really glad to see that you are
tackling this topic. If it is done right it will surely be a net benefit
to all.

Along the lines of "if it is done right", what I did not see in this
proposal is any work relating to these two topics:

a. Removing duplicate definitions from the SANA Glossary so that we
just have one official set
b. A plan to normalize the definitions in all the published
standards so that we really have only one set of terms in use across the
CCSDS standards and the SANA

It's not clear that either of these "clean up" tasks are part of the
proposal. Are they?

Thanks, Peter
