[CESG] CSS Area statement on use of cloud computing resources for CCSDS prototyping

Nestor,

I spoke with Brandon Bailey yesterday. There's a test case for use of cloud services for this type of activity going on now. If that's successful (administratively) then they can look at using it for SDLS (in conjunction with ESA and/or CNES, I believe).

Nestor, we could consider the testing of the updated CFDP spec ?

Gippo

I got a mial from Brandon Bailey suggesting SDLS as a good candidate

See below

Mario/Nestor,
I tried to contact Keith directly but I couldn’t find his contact
information. So I am sending direct to you guys. See email below…
I think SDLS is a good candidate for cloud based testing…. It is already on
our radar as we were discussing it in London.

Not sure if this will make it to you Keith (I’m guessing your email address).
I have some ideas about CCSDS interoperability testing on the Cloud. I have
been talking with Cloud providers for other projects that I have been working
on. I brought up the idea of cloud testing in the SDLS meeting in London and
I’m thinking it is a viable option for us going forward. There are too many
loopholes to go through to get firewalls opened up between agencies.
Depending on the agency’s policies and how it views the data being used; that
probably drives where and which cloud it can go into. If it is “NASA” data
then it needs to go onto GovCloud behind the NASA firewall which then brings
in all the issues with NASA firewalls. However, if the information is cleared
for export control/public release (which it would need to be to share with
international partners) then it can go on the public cloud. I’m thinking the
public cloud is the way to go. CSSO in NASA are the people we would need to
work with when procuring AWS services on the public side.
For the SDLS extended procedures testing, we are going to need a better
solution for inter-agency testing. For the initial Blue Book and Yellow Book,
we were able to get by with transmitting frames over email but we are going
to need a closed loop – integrated system to do full SDLS testing. I’m
thinking the cloud is the way to go for this.
If you need more information, let me know.

Brandon,
Perfect timing for you asking about cloud-based prototypes.
See the email below and the attachment.
If you like, contact Keith Scott. He supports JPL but I think he is in
Virginia.
I know nothing about it, so it would be great if you could find out what is
going on. I think IV&V would be a great participant or even lead on the
entire testbed, but we would have to work fast.

Could we have some kind of incarnation of the MO Service Testbed on the cloud
so that testing new books would be easier?

Dear all,

I have an action (due date = 10th Oct 2015) to find potential candidates in
MOIMS to be used as pilot project in a Cloud based interoperability Test Bed

You will find attached the proposal prepared by K. Scott (SIS AD).

My personal opinion is that SM&C WG is the best suited to have a pilot
Project, but NAV and DAI please analyse it.

Let me have your feedback by 10th March cob
