[Cesg-all] Test Drive the New CCSDS.org (Deadline 07FEB05)

Brian,

Thank you for the opportunity to feed back my comments on the test CCSDS
website.

I have the following recommendations:

1. For display of the CCSDS recommendations, I recommend you provide the
"CCSDS layered protocol stack" as one of the ways of organizing the view of
the CCSDS recommendations. I provided an example of what this stack looks
like as an attachment to this email (and provided Penelope with a hard copy
when we met at the last ITC conference - See Adrian for any updates to this
vg). We often use this viewgraph as an introduction to CCSDS documents and
protocols whenever we give presentations, so it has been pretty much
exposed to the user community. And of course it follows the ISO protocol
layered model. Using this model as a way of locating CCSDS protocols on the
web site, would eliminate pesky problems such as where do we locate the
Prox-1 protocol suite (Physical layer, Coding & Synchronization, Data link
layer) on the web site. Currently, it's located under "Telecommand". But
it's a bi-directional protocol - it can and is being using for telemetry
and telecommand data transfer. It was restructured to fit the CCSDS layered
protocol model. How about providing this view (quite possibly not the only
view, but a key view) for enabling users to locate the CCSDS documents on
the web site?

2. I couldn't get the search engine to work at all. I don't know if you
have enabled that feature yet.

3. I like the pictures that you are displaying on each of the pages, but
the captions need some improvements.
"standard thinking - extraordinary results" is one example.

This is an example of where one can easily get into some trouble in public
perception. By way of analogy, JPL has a mission called MSL. The original
mission was called, Mars Smart Lander. JPL changed that name to Mars
Science Laboratory. Because if that lander was considered "smart", were all
of the previous landers "less than smart". And secondly, because the name
is more descriptive of what the mission actually does.
How about something like the INTEL Inside idea for the caption for this
picture - e.g., CCSDS Standards Throughout ... Extraordinary Results

thanks,

Greg
