For the past few months I have been investigating the applicability of the various (and overwhelmingly numerous) options to enclosing Terrestrial Generic File Transfer (TGFT) payload and metadata in CCSDS XML-Formatted Data Units (XFDUs),
taking into account the simplifications afforded by the TGFT use cases as compared to the long-term archiving requirements for which the XFDU had originally been designed to support.

This draft documents the results of my “walk” of the (quite extensive) XML schema for the CCSDS-standard XFDU, in which I attempted to determine what features are appropriate for all cases of TGFT, which ones were unnecessary for TGFT,
and which ones might be deferred to the services that will use TGFT. While I feel as though I’ve done a pretty complete job in this respect, there are still some questions and considerations (marked by in-line “AUTHOR’S NOTEs” and mark-up comments) resulting
from ambiguities in the XFDU Blue Book and the intent for TGFT.

I intend to take the results of the analysis and document a simplified set of XFDU construction rules for TGFT in section 3 of the tech note, and to add at least one example. My plan is to have the next draft of the Tech Note with these
two topics addressed by the end of this month (February).
