<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black">What is missing from all of this is the user’s perspective on IPN. Specifically, the Artemis Program that is developing multiple multi-$B systems (with more to come in their huge catalog of elements) and encouraging
multiple space agencies to come along with additional large investments. This produces a brand new & enormous community of interest – all based on Artemis using IPv4 or IPv4/v6 end-to-end (at least for initial missions). They have given some vague indications
of adding BP from Artemis-VI or later but successful use of IP on the early missions could easily cause that to be delayed. We may not like it but we can't stop the Elephant. I suggest that what we need is to get out of our well-defined but rigid CCSDS-based
mindset (apologies if that gives offense but I’m trying to jolt you into considering a different perspective) and set up something new with this rapidly emerging user community to see how we should adjust to the coming onslaught. Why don’t we consider engaging
the extended (international) Artemis community outside existing CCSDS WGs in an attempt to determine how to align future standards development with the emerging needs of Human Space Flight? Those mission capabilities drive the evolution of our communication,
networking, mission operations, & navigation capabilities.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

ISO/OSI protocol stack layers. As such, IP is traditionally considered the network layer and what above is either a transport layer (TCP or UDP) or an overlay. It would be good to re-align the terminology (and probably also the diagram) to the views given
in the SSI book. I also think that the SISG report dated 2009 (if I’m not wrong) advocating for the use of DTN in space provides some more precise terminology or diagrams.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">And now that people are getting interested into IP islands and some even argue that IP could be used end-to-end in space, these diagrams could indeed create that confusion

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Thanks for sending this. I think you did a great job of pulling together existing CCSDS (and IOAG) intro materials and merging in newer materials relating to SIS efforts. Including the IOAG “Lunar Mission”
overview slides (slides 16 & 17 ) is, I believe, a great motivator for why we need the whole IPN suite of standards.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">If there is one thing in these materials, and others, that causes confusion it is the distinction drawn on slide 24 between what is highlighted in red as the “Network Layer”, which only includes IP and Encap,
and the upper layers labelled “Bundle Layer” that are not highlighted. This upper layer includes BP (but not BPSec), LTP, and all that CLA stuff. The reason why I find this troubling is that it can leave the impression that BP is ONLY an “overlay” network
and that IP is really the “Network Layer”. In reality, as is shown on slides 29 & 30, we are advocating for a DTN “backbone network” that is used to connect “IP regions”. Slide 30 makes that pretty clear, but I think we could do a better job of labelling
the DTN parts and the IP parts.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Maybe this feels like I’m being “too picky”, but I think we have something of an uphill battle in getting folks to understand why having the DTN Solar System Internet (SSI)
<b><i>backbone</i></b> is so important in enabling these “islands of IP” to communicate effectively. Given the ubiquity of IP in our terrestrial world it is too easy for people to think that it’s really IP everywhere, but that cannot be the case in space.
I think we all understand this, but I do not know that we are communicating it as effectively as we might.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

I’ve however to say that many people were quite interested to see what’s happening in CCSDS and in particular which activities are carried out and which are planned next. That’s why I think it important to do some good “commercial” of what CCSDS is doing,
since I had the impression that obviously many stakeholders use our standards for system/product developments but then have a little view on the actual CCSDS mission and framework. As such, at the end of my talk, I have received the usual question as to why
CCSDS is so slow in coming up with new recommendations…</span><o:p></o:p></p>
